Meet The Wonderful Lectors of SS. Peter and Paul, Nyanya, Abuja!

Our weekly T-Talent Spotlight series has brought to you something a bit different and unique for this week’s edition. Since it is the season for lectors, and indeed praiseworthy for their wonderful service to the church, the crew is delighted to present this vibrant and devoted group of lectors serving faithfully at SS. Peter and Paul, Nyanya, Abuja.

The ministry of a lector is an ancient ministry in the Catholic Church. Primarily, every Catholic is a lector! However, there are those who have specially taken upon themselves the glorious garment of being trained in the art of proclaiming the living Word of God, without which the Liturgy of the Holy Eucharist, or the Mass, is left incomplete.

Have you been to this parish? What do you know about them? Every Catholic group has a journey behind the success and a story to tell. In their daily witnessing to the faith through their powerful ministry of the proclamation of the Word, they keep building the Body of Christ and keeping that glorious mandate given by the Master Himself to His Body, the Church.

PART 1

1. The title of the song would be Thanksgiving and Love. This is because we are a community of love, built on fellowship and togetherness, and we never fail to give thanks to God for our community.
2. The name of our parish is SS. Peter and Paul, Nyanya, Abuja. Our vibe is togetherness. We always speak with one voice.
3. Love, Service, and Humility.
4. We normally hold our Lectors’ rehearsals once every week on Thursdays, and we hold our general meeting on the last Thursday of the month. We have probation classes for new members every Tuesday, and old members are scheduled in batches for retraining classes on Tuesdays as well.
5. The unsung heroes are the members who are always ready to fill in for another lector whenever there is an emergency. They don’t ask questions and are always ready to step up when necessary to ensure that the ministry continues to grow.

PART 2

1. Not necessarily this year, but very recently, we created a TikTok page and a Facebook page to share our journey and lessons on how to spread the Word better.
2. In March, we organized a Lenten retreat at a retreat center in the Archdiocese of Abuja, and it has been the most impactful retreat I have attended this year. We prayed the Rosary, had quiet time with the Lord in the Chapel, attended a seminar, had heart-to-heart talks and confessions, and we ended it with Holy Mass.

4. We’re a group of mostly young people, so it’s easy to get along with one another. We try to participate in our activities with love and togetherness, sharing jokes and light-hearted moments, and visiting members during celebrations and at other times as well.
5. I would like to give a special shout-out to those who participated in the ongoing Lectors’ contest: Sis. Jennifer Uzuanwu, Sis. Mary Adache, and Bro. Stanley Agbo. Your sacrifice and dedication to the board are second to none. God bless you!

PART 3

1. Because we already had an impactful retreat this year, I would focus on hosting a seminar for members on effective proclamation. This seminar would be a one-day event with two resourceful speakers. Members would be divided into breakout sessions after each speaker to deliberate further on the topic and share with one another. There would be a tea break between both sessions and refreshments after the second session. The event would be hosted in a serene garden or event center far from the parish to include a road trip and sightseeing. Members would bond during the trip, which would make the breakout sessions easier to participate in.
2. Previously, I was not consistent in receiving Holy Communion. But since I joined this community, I have made conscious efforts to remain in a state of grace and go for confession when necessary to keep myself in communion with God always.
3. My goal is to have a group of Spirit-filled proclaimers who not only proclaim the Word, but also know the Word, live the Word, and bring about change in the lives of others who would want to emulate them.
4. The only way to stay connected is to constantly seek the face of God. Do not let setbacks deter you. You have to fight twice as hard to overcome the hurdles and barriers facing you.
5. Every young person in my parish should join our group because we are a community of love. We will help you build your faith and your relationship with God. We are also a group of fun-loving people who always look for new and creative ways to spread the Word. Finally, we will help you build your confidence, polish your English, and help you stand out wherever you find yourself, because proclaiming the Word makes you bold, fearless, and courageous.
