I Peter 2:2-5.9-12; Psalm 100:1-2.3.4.5. (R.2b); Mark 10:46-52HOLD IT TIGHT!

By Rev. Fr. Linus Akase

In the first reading, St. Peter reminded us of our identity: that we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people for the purpose of declaring His glory here on earth. This has always been the desire of God that we should be His own. However, so many calamities have befalling us such as hunger, sickness, temptation, etc. In the Gospel passage, Bartimeus suffered total blindness. As a blind man, he was seriously in need of cure. As he noticed the movement of Jesus around him he began to shout, Jesus! Son of David! Take pity on me. Many people who stood beside him prevented him from calling on the Messiah but that notwithstanding, he persisted and his persistence won him the attention of the Lord who stopped and asked that he should be called. His encounter with the Lord restored his sight.Bartimeus was able to make good use of this opportunity. He never allowed Jesus to pass his way without touching his life. On daily basis, God has been placing before us every opportunity that He will make us better. However, we are not ready to make use of such opportunities. Rather, certain things are blinding us especially materialism, noise pollution, etc. Let us be frank here, amidst poverty in the land, if Jesus asks you to “what can I do for you?” what will you ask?
